Questions about cruises? (cost and planning etc)?...

...ok so im only 15 and my family hardly ever goes on good vacations. when my parents were together we went to myrtle beach almost every year and i went on a cruise to mexico in 7th grade. and that was the best week of my life and i wish we could do those things again but my dads gf ruins all of them and stuff...but anyway i want to go on a cruise with friends or whatever when im older (like 21 i think thats the youngest you can be) but anyway i want to go on a really nice one to spain (and other countries it just has to include spain) id like it to be 14 days but i doubt ill have THAT much money to throw away when im 21. what goes into planning? what are they charging you for? anything i should do to make sure i save enough money? i have $1000 in the bank already so i actually do save my money and i dont even have a job. (its from babysitting and a paper route i did a few years ago) but how much do i need for just myself? if my friends are going are they cheaper cause theyre adding on? give as much information as you can thanks :)

"Hi Sam,

I like your style!

In today's prices I think you should count on at least $100-$125 per day per person on a cruise ship as you describe. Many European cruises are longer than some we have here, so you will probably be on a 12-14 day cruise. Of course the rooms are for two... no discounts until you add a third or fourth person.

Of course, you must include airfare to Europe.... You can find prices all over the place, but for planning purposes, figure about $500 per person R/T.

At every port of call, you will want to do something, and that costs money. Sometimes a lot of money. Figure on a 12 day cruise, at least $400 on shore excursions per person... just a number.

So you are at least $4,000+ for a two person cruise. That sounds pretty light compared to what I have spent in the past....

Here's an alternative: Do a cruise out of the US where you don't have to spend so much on air travel, and can usually find cheaper, shorter cruises.

As for Spain, speak to your counselor at school about summer travel programs in Spain. When you go as a group, you can find some terrific bargains and you have experienced leaders with you... and you don't have to wait until you are 21. Some involve study where you will actually get school credits... and they are fun. Some are for a month or more!

Start taking spanish classes in school now!

BTW... you can go with other adults on a cruise if you find someone who is going. There are different groups... just keep your eyes and ears open for ideas.

ALSO: Start looking around for jobs on a cruise ship after you turn 18. Could be a great way to spend a year before going to college!

Keep kicking ideas around, and never stop dreaming! Set your goals and keep trying... you will make it!

I was wondering if a Bahamas Cruise would require a passport?...

...Hello there! Thanks for viewing my question!

I am looking at Cruises and I realized I still didn't get my Passport updated so I was wondering if you needed a passport to go to the following places: (Also the cruise line is Royal Caribbean)

Miami, Florida
Nassau, Bahamas
Cococay, Bahamas
Key West, Florida

Would an ID or a student ID be ok?

Thank you.

"A student ID would not suffice. You will need your original birth certificate or a certified copy and a governmental proof of ID for closed-loop cruise travel.
See "traveling by sea" on attached website.
http://www.dhs.gov/xprevprot/programs/gc_1200693579776.shtm ..
The U.S. birth certificate and a U.S. photo ID are required in lieu of a passport to enter the Bahamas.

I am going on a med cruise with NCL on the 9th of August. We are visiting various places Excursions or No?...

...can anyone suggest, do I pay the expensive fee's the cruise line want for excursions or simply do our own thing?

"YES, for sure do excursions. You don't want to go all that way and then miss some of the best historical sights in the world. I have cruised the Med twice and have another booked right now that I have already booked excursions for. It would help to know which cruise you are taking and what port stops you will have. Not all cruises of the Med are the same and the ports are also different. It also makes a difference what cruise port you depart from. So I'll go over some of the ports I have been to and give you a suggestion on each.

Both of my Med cruises (and the one we have booked) departed from Barcelona. If you fly into Barcelona and you have time before the cruise departs or after it returns and before your flight (like late afternoon) you can tour Barcelona on your own. We are going to use this hop-on hop-off bus to tour when we return there. http://www.barcelona-on-line.es/eng/reserves/bus_turistic.htm

Nice/Monte Carlo: We did a ship's tour at this stop but I was not impressed with it. My advice is go on your own.

Florence/Pisa (Luverno): In my opinion the Leaning Tower of Pisa is a must and Florence was nice also. You can do both in one day. We did but it was a rushed tour. But if you want to book your own try this web site: http://www.viator.com/Florence/d519-ttd
and:
http://www.italyguides.it/us/pisa/pisa_italy.htm

Naples: Naples you can do on your own, even if you want to go to Pompeii which I highly recommend. http://www.viator.com/Naples/d508-ttd

Rome: Rome is a MUST do on any Med cruise but my advice is to book with the cruise line for this one port because the cruise pier is a good hour by car, bus or train from the city. I have read reviews where people made their own arrangements and the train station to take you to Rome is not too far from the pier. BUT, if you go on your own and are late getting back you do run the chance of being left behind; they WILL leave you. But if you want to do your own touring this web site will help: http://www.viator.com/Rome/d511-ttd
AND:
http://www.limousineserviceinromeitaly.com/

http://mv.vatican.va/3_EN/pages/z-Info/MV_Info_Servizi_Visite.html

Athens: The port for Athens is about 20 miles from the city and you can get ab taxi and go on your own. But you better know where you are going as the street signs are in Greek. http://www.athensguide.org/

Santorini: No ship's tour necessary. Just take the tender boat ashore and ride the tram up to the city level. We did a tour but realized after wards that we didn't really see much.

Mykonos: go on your own. You can walk into town or take a shuttle bus.

Kusadasi (Ephesus): I suggest taking a ship's tour because Ephesus is a good half hour bus ride from the pier. http://www.kusadasi.net/

But if you want to book yourself you can do that online but you'll need to do a lot of research so you'll know what you want to see and how much it costs. Then you'll need to decide whether you want to book in advance on your own tours or wait until you get to the port city. My advice is book in advance.e web sites:"

Celebrity cruise on the Millennium out of San Juan?...

...I recently asked a question about what people's opinion was on two different cruise lines. One girl said she would choose Celebrity over Royal but not if it was on the Millennium going out of San Juan. She said "if your Millennium cruise is departing from San Juan, that may affect the cruise experience." Why would she say this and is it true?

"I read that person's comment and I think it shows her (or someones') prejudices. I have done two cruises that departed from Puerto Rico and both were great. But I think what this person may be referring to is a reference to the passenger demographics on our last cruise departing from there. We did that cruise on the RC's Adventure of the Seas a couple yrs ago and although I didn't notice it when I booked the cruise, it turned out to be on Mother's day. I am not sure if or how that had an impact on demographics but as it turned out about 50% of the passengers were from Puerto Rico and a good number from Mexico. Now that didn't bother me one bit but it could well have made some closed minded people uncomfortable. But I think the real reason there were so many people on board from PR is that particular cruise date was really cheap. It was maybe $100 to $200 less per person than other weeks for the same cruise. So people who lived in PR could go for even less since they didn't have to pay air fare to get to PR. But the extremely low fare was just why I picked that date to go. On my previous cruise from PR on the Norwegian's Dreamward the demographics were not like that. So, in my opinion there is absolutely nothing wrong with cruising from PR.

I have cruised from Miami on dates that had real bargain fares and there were lots of Cubans and Hispanics on the ship because it was a cheap date to cruise. And I know for sure that there is nothing wrong with cruising on the Millennium, I just spent 2 weeks on it in February.

I have cruised on ships where there were lots of Orientals, and on others lots of Brazilians and Portuguese. But you never know when you cruise what the demographics will be; you just learn that people from places other than the US have somewhat different ways and deal with it. And then I have been on some cruises where most people were from the US and they got on my nerves too!! LOL"

Cruise Ship Employment?...

...I am looking into working for a cruise line. I am looking at the Disney Cruise Line, Princess Cruise Line, and Norwegian Cruise Line. I was wondering if anybody had worked for these companie and what you thought of them or if you'd worked for another company and had an opinion one way or another.
Royal Caribbean is another one I'm curious about.

"Yes, this question is asked almost every day, so there are plenty of answers on this website. Otherwise, you can go to the cruise lines' websites and click on "employment".

Most cruise lines do not hire many Americans - don't think I've met any in the cruises I've taken. Americans generally would not want to work under the conditions required on a cruise ship. You have long contracts [six months or more], very long days and very long work weeks, crowded accommodations, low pay. And you sometimes cannot get off the ship at the ports you visit.

NCL does have one ship that has an American staff - the one that circles Hawaii - and it is notorious for poor service.

Working on a cruise ship is definitely not as glamorous as it sounds."

What should I wear the first day of the cruise?...

...Im going on carnival cruise on july 4. This is my first cruise. Help!

"Wear whatever your comfortable in and something cute too as your picture will be taken. Don't worry if your luggage does not arrive to your cabin before you go to dinner because on the first day, the cruise company knows that not everyone can dress for dinner, so whatever you have on is just fine."

What is the best cruise to go on?...

...This is for people that have been on lots of cruises. What are your favorite destinations? What are your favorite cruise lines for the money? Any tips for saving money and having a good time?

"I have cruised on Princess, Holland America, Celebrity, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean and had cruises to South America, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, Australia/New Zealand, Canada/New England, the Baltic countries, the Mediterranean, and all over the Caribbean including the Panama Canal. My favorite of all of these was the Mediterranean because of all of the fantastic and historical sights and cities to see, like Rome, Pisa, Pompeii, Spain, the Canary Islands, Gibraltar, Athens, and the Greek islands.

Cruising the Caribbean is great also and allows opportunity for great fun at the beaches, some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, except Hawaii is prettier. The Caribbean is really the best "fun" destinations for cruising.

My favorite cruise line is Royal Caribbean, but if you want just a little more upscale you may want to go with Princess or Celebrity. Royal Caribbean ships have the most activities on the ship for you and they do have great looking ships too. In my opinion Royal Caribbean also has the best and easiest web site to use and you can find deals on their site very easily compared to the others. But most do have specials listed on their web sites that will save you money.

The best way to save money is shop around and learn what a cruise should cost for the type cabin you want, the destination/itinerary you want and the number of days you want to cruise. So if you see an ad that says 40% off you will know whether that's a real deal or just a few dollars less than the normal prices for that type cruise on other cruise lines and ships. Booking early, up to a year or more in advance, can also save you money because as the cruise date approaches the prices generally increase. There are some exceptions to this where a "deal" or discount will be offered for a few days or week about 30 to 60 days before the cruise.

You don't have to worry about having a good time, you will, especially if you are on a Royal Caribbean ship."

Carnival cruise beverages?...

...are there any non alcoholic beverages available for teens on cruise ships? im 17
like can i ask for a virgin daiquiri, margrita, etc

can anyone suggest any good virigin drinks for me also?
ok so ya im plannin on bringing 2 redbulls w/ me. im not goin to be drinking a lot. i just relly think that haveing a "fruity" drink on a cruise would be a cliche experience that i MUST do. ahah so any suggestions of virgin drinks? like fruity drinks?

"Yes the bars have a menu and on the back page is a list of Non-alcoholic drinks. I don't think you can really get a virgin margarita as that would just be sour mix.

But you can get any flavor daquiri--strawberry, mango which is my personal favorite, pineapple, etc. Many cruise lines have their own special mixtures too like a Carnival Fun Ship which is their own unique fruit punch blend. You can also ask the bartender to mix you a combination--like mango-pineapple daquiri or pina collada with some orange juice in as well. They would be more than willing to create some unique flavors just for you.

You can get a Bloody Mary virgin if you like v8. Pina Colada if you like coconut.

Just be aware that these are rather expensive. The mix is what you pay for not the alcohol so even a virgin drink will cost about $6-7 each."
